Well, the girls win the big prize. Team Manitoba that is, with Cathy O., Mrs. JHcurl's email buddy. We met them a couple of years ago in Halifax at the Canadian Olympic Trials. Mrs. and Cathy O really hit it off. The Scotties win gives them a berth in the next trials. Guess were we will be headed in December of 2009. I expect an email will be coming telling her to get to Vernon for the Worlds. If you ever wanted to attend a curling event, go to the Canadian Olympic Trials. It was unbelievable in Halifax and I am sure the next one will be just as good. Here is a video clip of the last couple of shots.
The Nutmeg Club Championships were held this weekend with teams that are put together by the organizer. The final came down to Derek (of course) and Rob (recent 2nd event runner up at the Dykes). The funny thing is that Rob's team didn't want to face Derek in the final and wanted to forfeit the game. Rob of course bailed them out and the game went to an extra end with Derek the winner.
Okay, three weekends, three bonspiels. The McKay-Douglas at Ardsley, the Stone at Plainfield and then the Greatest Show on Earth, the Golden Handle at Nutmeg. A couple of weeks of league play left then pull the plug. A little clean up and then off to Grand Forks for the Men's Worlds. Spring is approaching.

Rockstar curling and lots of links
Seems that Rockstar curling is taking over the blogosphere and some US media. The Curling News blog has lots of links, so go there to see them all.
The official website even has a blog now. It seems even a "rocket scientist" signed up, I wonder who that could be...hmm. Next they will be claiming to have a guy who splits atoms or makes black holes in Long Island.
What else, oh yeah the Scotties. Well the girls (team Manitoba) made a tiebreaker this morning. Hopefully they make a run through the playoffs.
Hey and that Canadian guy from Philly with the great sense of humor has joined the blog world. C'mon man, you need to write more stuff, even if nobody reads it.

lots of curling
Just back from Norfolk where we played in the mixed. Won the third event and had a lot of fun. With only ten teams there was no curling Saturday night so we all hung out in the bar and watched the Scotties. Mrs. JHcurl's favorite team was playing so that was fun. Her girls from MB are doing well so far.
Hey, the Rockstar curling website is up and accepting registrations. Go to www.rockstarcurling.com to sign up. Wonder if they want an old guy to make it interesting.
Lots of curling happening with the Scotties and US Nationals. Looks like there may be a new team headed to the Worlds for the men. The women start this morning and it wouldn't surprise me if team Lank makes it this year. Of course, rooting for the home team of Charrissa, Janice, Nicole and Rachel.
Our baseball fans on the Ferbey team lost in the final of the Alberta playdowns. Team Martin beat them three times. Probably still see Dave at the Worlds in Grand Forks as CurlTV will be there.
Lots of bonspiels upcoming with the Douglas at Ardsley, then the PCC stone in Plainfield and the best mixed bonspiel, the Golden Handle at Nutmeg. Gonna play in the GH this year so that will be different. Of course, still have to do the ice thing as well.
Make sure you send fanmail to the teams at the US Nationals.

So, did you here about the RockStar curling ? Could be really interesting and certainly can't hurt with advertising curling here. Yep, Bruce and Jon really do curl. Mrs. JHcurl has had some preliminary talks with their "people" to help them out at various times but nothing has every come of it.
The Francis Dykes 5 and under bonspiel was held this weekend and Nutmeg sent a team of newbies. They did fantastic and were the runner-up in the second event. Lost the first game and then went on a 4 game winning streak to reach the final. Lost in an extra end to Team Sethi from Potomac. Not bad for a group of guys that all started last year, congrats to Rob, Joel, Karl and Mike.
The Nutmeg-Plainfield friendly was also this past weekend. Nutmeg was victorious and we are returning with the trophy until next season. Thanks to all the Plainfield folks for their wonderful hospitality. Always a lot of fun down there.
Nationals start soon and Nutmeg is represented by Charrissa with her team of Janice, Nicole and Rachel. Have fun out there in Hibbing.
The Scotties also starts soon so Mrs. JHcurl will be watching her "favourite" team from Manitoba. She has been emailing with Cathy O. who is trying to convince her to come out to Regina.
Off to the Norfolk mixed this weekend for a bit of curling and a lot of fun. They only have ten teams but it will still be a good party I am sure.

some old blogs posted
So, I was able to get some of my old blogs from Mikey. Many thanks to him for all the fun I had posting blogs at InTheHack.
Let's see, some clean up items. Derek and Charrissa won the GNCC Mixed Playdowns with teammates Rachel Sethi and Sean Murray from Potomac. The trophy is now residing at Nutmeg for awhile. Good luck to them at National Mixed.
The Golden Handle is almost full with 18 teams signed up. Two Nutmeg teams survived the playoffs to get in. Derek and Charrissa won't be back to defend this year, see above.
I hear the GNCC club national team from Potomac had to add a fifth player due to a work commitment of the skip, Chris. The fifth they added is an okay curler, Scott Edie, so I guess that will work out.
The Norfolk mixed is next week and we will be there. The Dykes started yesterday with 40 teams and one of them from Nutmeg. Got to get more of the newbies involved next year.

blog 1/31/2008
Just got back from the Thrifty at Plainfield. Got to play on Sunday at least this year. Bit of problem on the team as my knees were still aching from the club playdowns and Mrs. JHcurl has been having back problems. So, two people who can't sweep but we held our own anyway. Lots of karaoke on Saturday night and at least this year we didnt get "fleeced". The entire pipe band didn't show up this year either so that was better, only 4 pipers I think in a really small room, oh yeah, and 4 drummers.
Mixed playdowns are under way as I write this. Pretty good field this year in the GNCC with lots of experience. Derek was trying to lobby the USCA for a volume discount as he and Charrissa have entered every national event this year (doubles, club, nationals and mixed).
The serious curling season is about to start with Nationals and all the Canadian events. Lots of curling to watch and with the CurlTV subscription now have to figure out how to get any work done.
On the Nutmeg front we added another 40 or so curlers this season so are well over 165 I think. Really good retention from last year as almost everyone returned. The Golden Handle is shaping up nicely with 16 teams entered so far. Nutmeg is having playdowns to get in with four teams playing off.
Go Giants!

2007 year in review
There is snow on the ground and lights on the trees, so must be time for the “Christmas” letter.
The year started nicely with lots of new curlers at Nutmeg. Our friends Ray Turnbull and Georgina Wheatcraft came in to hold a clinic at Ardsley. After that was over Mrs. JHcurl and Georgina spent a few days in New York shopping.
The end of the curling season is starting to get close and we hold the Golden Handle mixed at the new club for the first time. Besides the snow storm, losing the compressor and the ice melting a little it was a great time.
Off to the Men’s Worlds in Edmonton. A bit of hassle to get there but what a great time. Big crowds for every draw and Team USA does great by winning the bronze. A special treat is dinner at Dave and Heather Nedohins’ house and then watching US v Canada with Dave on TV. Very cool.
Spring is here and we start with the Yankee games. Then a fabulous party on Ellis Island with fireworks by Grucci celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fairfield Maxwell.
Off to Cape Cod for the mixed summerspiel. Good weather and lots of beach time.
Mrs. JHcurl goes in for surgery right after and that was a little scary but everything turned out great. She spends the next 6 weeks recovering and enjoying some time off at the beach. Oh yeah and two weeks after she gets out of the hospital, we fly off for the annual Lake of the Woods retreat. Very low key with a lot of fishing for me and lots of relaxing for her.
Get back and attend some more Yankee games with Dave and Heather and Randy Ferby. Randy is a huge fan as he is here for 4 days and goes to a game every day.
Fall arrives and the Travel Channel wants to film a curling segment for Anthony Bourdain. We don’t have ice yet so we “make” “curling” ice on the hockey rink. It kind of works and based on the show (which just aired) it actually turned out good.
Off to Long Beach Island (NJ) for the annual meeting of the LBI CC. Voted in a new member this year and drank a whole bunch of beer, so business as usual.
Time to make ice. Things go much smoother this year, the days are shorter and we get done in 36 less hours then the first year. The club is up and running for the new season with 125 members to start. Derek and Charrissa have moved to CT and are now curling at Nutmeg, what a great addition as both curlers and helping out all the newbies.
Now it is into NY to Rockefeller Center to help with the Korbel Challenge. Can’t wait to see what that looks like on TV what with the high humidity and temperatures in the 50’s and the rain. It was an adventure.
Bonspiel season gets underway, we win the 4th event at the Founders, finish runnerup in first event at the Harvest and get wiped out in Norfolk at the mens’.
The final month sees Nutmeg hold the first ever 5 and under bonspiel sponsored by the USWCA. It goes pretty well but I think the timing held down the number of teams. Look out for that K. Dropkin junior team in a couple of years. For a group of 12 to 14 year olds, they certainly know how to play the game.
Another year older but probably no wiser. Happy Holidays to all and a safe and healthy New Year.
